Sulfur mineral
Sulfur is a natural element found in nature in the form of bright yellow crystals, and is one of the essential elements used in many chemical industries
Composition method
Sulfur is formed in nature in several ways. From them:
Volcanic activity: Sulfur is formed in volcanic fissures and hot springs as a result of the reaction of sulfur-rich volcanic gases with oxygen and water.
Chemical precipitation in sedimentary environments: Sulfur is formed from the reduction of sulfate by bacteria in marine environments and salt lakes.
Hydrothermal reaction: Sulfur precipitates from hot, sulfide-bearing solutions when they react with oxygen.
Organic Reactions: Formed as a result of the decomposition of sulfur-rich organic matter in swamps and organic sediments.
Configuration environment
Volcanic environments: Found in volcanic craters and geothermal areas such as hot springs.
Marine sedimentary environments: Found in gypsum and anhydrite deposits resulting from evaporation.
Areas rich in organic matter: Forms in swamps and oil layers as a result of bacterial decomposition.
Hydrothermal formations: It is deposited in mineral veins rich in sulfides.
Chemical formula
S
It consists of pure sulfur without any additional elements.
Physical properties:
Yellow in color, fragile. Odorless in its pure state. However, it emits an unpleasant odor when it burns.
It is found in nature as crystalline deposits or in sulfur compounds.
It is characterized by a low hardness (1.5-2 ) on the Mohs scale.
Crystal structure
Orthorhombic crystal system at normal temperatures.
It converts to a monoclinic crystal system at temperatures above °C.95.5 and is found in transparent bright yellow crystals or as irregular clumps.
The most important uses
Production of sulfuric acid:(H₂SO₄) Used in the manufacture of fertilizers, batteries, and chemicals.
Production of pesticides and disinfectants: It is used as a fungicide and in the pharmaceutical industry.
Oil refining: It is used to remove impurities from fuels and industrial gases.
Where to go in Saudi Arabia
Sulfur is found in several locations within the Kingdom. especially in volcanic and mineral-rich areas. Of which:
Western Region Hejaz - Medina - Taif:Contains sulfur associated with thermal volcanic activity in ancient geologic times.
Eastern Province Jubail - Al-Ahsa - Empty Quarter: Found in oil and natural gas deposits where it is extracted during oil refining operations.
Top exporting countries:
China, Russia, Canada. and the United States One of the largest exporters of sulfur
